I love the lack of loyalty people showed Gonzaga when they finally bumped heads with Baylor.
Let’s be clear in hindsight, major recruits should and will continually flock to Gonzaga in the upcoming years as they should. While their conference isn’t the toughest, they will continually be a perennial power for years to come.
For the record, Mark Few was working to schedule high major competition like Baylor this year to prepare his team for the tournament. Since the Baylor-Gonzaga match-up during the regular season was called off due to Covid, I think it ultimately led to such a lopsided championship game.
Mid-December everyone and their brother was hanging on Gonzaga’s nuts while Baylor was sitting there as #2.
Everything I heard was that Gonzaga was “by far” the best team in the country and everyone else (including Baylor) was a “distant” second.
While I think I’ve watched more college basketball this year due to Covid than I have my entire life, I took to Twitter to share my dismay about broadcasters dismissing Baylor too quickly. See tweet picture below.
While I also love my Illini, I didn’t think that they had enough game to win it all and after I watched Baylor abuse them sometime in December, Baylor led my list.
See, I don’t think Illinois was bad, I actually loved watching them play but when I saw what the Baylor guards did to force Ayo into jumpers, that’s all I needed to see.
Look at Iowa, certainly there are Pros on that team, but where are the lock down defenders on that team and where are the players that can actually create their own shots against the best defenders in the country.
While, I loved what Baylor did defensively against Gonzaga, it’s really hard to simulate that pressure in practice if your the Zags.
Without speaking about right game plans or wrong game plans, I really think that Covid may have lost Gonzaga a National Championship.
In December 2020, I stated that Baylor wins 6 out of 10 contests against Gonzaga. Today, 3 days after the National Championship game I am going to say that Baylor wins 7 out of 10 contests against Gonzaga.
In my Twitter quote in December, I said that Baylor has more “dog in em” and that’s why I thought they were the better team. Having said that, I really think that if the Baylor-Gonzaga game happened in the regular season, Gonzaga would have been able to adjust and steal Game 2 and we would be crowning a different National Champion. That’s just my take and how the ball bounces.
